About Autignac
Autignac was founded in the late 1600's. Its population peaked at about 1 200 people during the early 1900's but has since declined to 729, excluding 100 children who come to the schools during the day. It is totally unspoiled, possibly because the streets are too narrow and twisty to enable large scale development in the village itself.
The village is in the middle of the Faugères wine district in the Languedoc and is surrounded by vineyards. Wine is made in the village and is of very superior quality. The majority of wine produced is red, with a small amount of rose, and most is sold locally.
The village is easily accessible from Beziers being just 15 minutes north on a good road, which is well signposted and within easy driving distance of established international airports at Montpellier (60 mins), Carcassonne (60 mins) or Toulouse (120 minutes). Ryanair has established flights from Bristol and London to Beziers Airport. There is also a railway station at Beziers with a TGV connection to Paris.
There is easy access to facilities for daily life, a bakery, 'tabac-presse' (actually a combined tobacconist, newsagent, butcher, supermarket and also a small hardware store), chemist, mobile library, hairdresser and an exceptional cafe (the Cafe du Commerce) which sells a four course meal including wine for 10 euro. There is a church and a post office very close by. Everything except the 'tabac-presse' is within 2 minutes walking distance of the house, the 'tabac-presse' takes an extra two minutes. There are markets on Tuesday, Thursday and Friday.
Less than five minutes drive away, there is an Intermarche supermarket where you can also buy fuel for your car.
Autignac enjoys a pleasant climate with a fairly short winter.
